I wouldn’t be surprised if the girls are telling the truth. It is very interesting how our views of people’s beliefs can differ from the truth.
Just like when they say “no you don’t have to get me anything it’s just commercial rubbish” what a girl means is you don’t HAVE to get me anything (but if you don’t I will know you don’t care enough to bother and you will pay for it)
