Increase Social Value - Being friendly to the people around you is always a good premise, but especially important when trying to impress a potential mate.  Be sure to ask a friendly, simple “how ya doin” to servers, people on the other team, or other sports fans so he knows you could have just as easily started talking to someone else.

Discover His - Most stories have several topic lines within them.  If you’ve told him about the last time you went canoeing and saw a gigantic herring, then you can ask him if he likes outdoors, canoeing, water, fishing, birding or the exact opposite (indoors, skydiving, animal rights etc).  If he gives you a one-liner answer, you can ask one more probing question but then allow for a pause.  If he’s interested in you he will pick the conversation back up.  If he’s not, he won’t and it’s time to pretend you see your friend off in the distance.

The first thing you need to decide when thinking about learning to build rapport is what kind of rapport you’d like to build. For those of you who stumbled on this link without any previous knowledge, rapport can be defined as a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups involved have an understanding of each other’s feelings or ideas and communicate well.

The two types of rapport are:

1)      Narrow Rapport: this is what people tend to tell you to do when teaching you how to make friends. This, however, is not good for making a friendship, but is much better for making an activity partner. Narrow rapport is picking one topic and digging deep into it and really focusing on the details of that area of thought. Do you have a friend who you only talk about cars with, everything is cars, and nothing else. After a long while of this, have you ever tried to talk to them about a problem or something outside of that topic? For those of you who haven’t, believe me that it can feel somewhat awkward. There’s nothing particularly wrong with this rapport, as it’s good for creating a specific type of bond!

2)      Wide Rapport: Think about your best friend. You can talk about anything and everything under the sun with them (hopefully!), and it’s taken years to get to this point. Would you believe me if I told you it was possible to create this with an absolute stranger in a relatively short time? Believe it. This type of relationship is called a broad friendship, and the key to forging one is to talk about a broad selection of ideas and activities.  This allows both parties to feel like they can bring anything to the table and it will be taken seriously.

Most people are aware of how to build narrow rapport, as this is the conventional knowledge and has probably been tried many times with the end goal of having a broad friendship. Since that is probably the case, I will focus primarily on wide rapport.

There are a few factors you need to be aware of that make it a bit easier:

1)      Body language: doing some research into body language gestures and what they mean can be greatly beneficial. There was a study done that showed that mirroring people’s body language (doing the same stances and gestures) can make people feel more connected and in tune. This typically done naturally when people are getting along, but it can be done consciously. In the study, they had the person mimic the participant either immediately, or after a small delay. If mirrored immediately, the participant felt like they were mocking them or manipulating the relationship, and this broke rapport. When there was a delay and it remained undetected, rapport was built and the relationship felt stronger than before.

2)      Physical Contact: People tend to touch people they like, and feel closer to people who touch them. There is a ladder of comfort when it comes to physical contact. The safest place to touch someone would be their upper arm (bicep/shoulder area) during conversation when you are just starting to get to know one another. Be aware that excessive touch will make you seem overly familiar, decreasing their affection for you. A good way to get around this would be using a technique known as fractionation.

3)      Rate of speech: matching their rate of speech will help them feel more at ease and give them a feeling that you are more like minded. If you speed significantly differs from your conversation partner, you will give two different, equally bad impressions: too slowly gives the impression you are slow-witted and boring; too fast will make them feel like you are unpredictable, or trying to sell them something. It’s not a perfect science, but keeping this aspect in mind will help you significantly!

4)      Acceptance: Part of being a good friend and – more importantly – person is to be accepting of everything the other person says. There is a significant difference between accepting and agreeing with someone. Accepting has more to do with tolerance and keeping an open mind. Agreeing means that you think the same things they think, which may not be true. Remember that you can try to convince them of other opinions, as this is the natural course of conversation, but keep it cool and collected if you aim to make friends.

5)      Topics: Remember to talk about a broad range of things that interest you. Are you into something a little less main stream? Taboo even? You may want to avoid pulling those topics out to a later time – bring those out to play when you have a bit of a rapport going with the person and you have an idea how accepting they may be with that topic. Maybe you want to weed out people who aren’t interested in a particular topic that is a little more taboo. You might actually want to pull it out at the beginning, though remember to keep it gentle, not forceful. If you keep an open mind when speaking to people, you’ll have even more to say in your conversations with someone else! Remember the old adage: we have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak! Be aware that bantering – also known as contentless conversation – is very useful in building rapport. A perfect example is in the video below.

6)      Use the power of Mystery: Learning how to be mysterious goes hand-in-hand when learning how to build rapport. I’ve mentioned this before and I’ll mention it again: mystery really helps in building relationships. When successfully done, it helps people think about you, it makes you more interesting, and best of all it stops you from forcing information they don’t want to hear. Finally, remember to talk to anyone and everyone! The more people you speak to, the more natural it will become. Who wants to be a keyboard jockey who can’t actually do the things he knows so much about? No one! So get out there and start talking! You’ll be a Rapport Building Master in no time!

It’s simple, actually! Learning how to start a conversation with a stranger can even be quite easy with practice, and a little preparation goes a long way. There are a few things you can do to prepare:

1)      Go online and read some interesting news articles: Articles are great to bring out into conversation, especially if they’re related to a field that you know a fair bit about. I’d recommend psychology articles, as they’re easy to digest and can be related to everyday experiences. The same cannot be said for less relatable subjects, such as computer science or math.

2)      Make a list of interesting stories that have happened in your life: once you have these listed, you can practice them with friends, or in front a mirror and get the delivery down. This will help to be more engaging and telling stories about your past will encourage others to talk about the things that have happened to them. It is important to let the other person have their turn to speak, as this allows for a connection to be made between you two. It works best to keep these stories upbeat and funny. Whenever something bad happens in my life, I tell myself it’ll make a good story later. Typically it does, and it comes off a lot better when you tell it laughing. Remember: No one likes a whiner or being brought down when they’re having a good time.

3)      Look up some good jokes, or ask people what their favourite ones are: Just like with the stories, practicing jokes really helps make them better. The great thing about telling jokes and stories is that people will reciprocate with their own, which will allow you to repeat them. The only difference between them is that you’ll have to preface other people’s stories with “Someone told me that they…” – in other words, don’t steal stories and pass them off as your own.

4)      Be Mysterious: Being mysterious really helps, as it can make people want to know a little bit more about you, and it’ll prevent you from coming on too strong.

5)      Work on being an interesting person: This will take you your entire life, but every baby step you take will make you more interesting. What makes for an interesting person? Someone who is passionate, has interests, tries new things, cares about people, and expresses themselves. If someone asks you “What do you do for fun?” and all you’ve got is “drink, watch tv, study”, then I suggest you get out there and experience a little more of the world!

Now that you’ve prepared, the rest pretty much takes care of itself. The only real “barrier” left is the initial nervousness that you have to overcome when walking up to someone. I’ve got a secret for you: of every time you ever approached someone, man or woman, 99% of the time nothing bad happens. Even in that 1% of the time that something “bad” happens, they may just say they can’t talk or don’t want to talk 99% of that 1%. To put it more straight forward: 999/1000 times you talk to a stranger, you will probably end up having a decent conversation.

3)     Physique: Are they really overweight? You may not want to invite them to go rock climbing, but maybe something that would appeal to them.

Acquaintance: Not really a friendship, per se, but someone you can hang around with. If you’re looking to appear popular, gaining a large number of acquaintances might help. I wouldn’t recommend this, however. Have you met Bob? He works in accounting. There, you now have an acquaintance.

Bromance: a close, non-sexual relationship between two or more same-sex people, most typically applied to men. This could be equated to a best friend between two guys who act in a way that makes it seem like they’re dating, but actually are not. Have you ever watched “Scrubs”? JD and Turk are a beacon of the bromantic relationship.

Cross-sex friend: As the name implies, it is a friendship between two people of different genders. This type of friendship is very rewarding, especially for those among us who find the opposite sex confusing. It can help by showing that they’re just people, and to demonstrate how they think. It can also help meeting someone to date, as they can have interesting friends! The best results from this relationship is when neither party finds the other one to be “their type,” or attractive.

Communal friendship: this is when a group of friends gather to provide encouragement and support in times of need. It typically only lasts as long as the support is needed, but can develop into a group of friends that continue to hang out after it is over. An example of this would be on the show “Community”, where the group originally gets together to study for exams.

Agentic Friendship: this is a friendship where both people involved lean on one another to help achieve practical goals, both professional and personal. Emotion and sharing of personal information isn’t typically too involved in this relationship, though they tend to enjoy sharing time together.

Activity Partner: Someone who is always down to do that one activity with you, whether it be boating, poker, squash, or watching movies. They’re great for that! The only drawback is that seeing these people in any other context can feel awkward, or uncomfortable.

With all of these different types of friendship, it’s hard to choose! Once you’ve chosen the type of friendship you’re looking to add to your life, you’ll have completed the first of five steps in making a friend.

No amount of knowledge or skill will get you success if that knowledge or skill is not valuable within your context.  Take the example of a musician. In the classical era, gaining success in this field meant securing a position writing for an aristocrat. Now, with the change in popular genres, rise of technology, and fundamental difference in the economy, gaining success as a musician requires a different model.

2)       Commit to learning the model – Commit to gaining the knowledge and learning the skills of those who are on a successful path.  This requires a high degree of either discipline or obsession. Passionately obsessing over a topic is the easiest way to gain the required knowledge, but you will also need to evoke discipline when the task at hand is requires it. Immerse yourself in the topic and commit to learning as much as you can.

3)      Internalize and apply your own meaning – Make the subject your own by recognizing the meaning behind your commitment to the defined path. Without this core meaning, the task will soon seem pointless and you are likely to discontinue your efforts. Why is this important to you? What do you hope to get from it? After internalizing the best working model for success, you may then develop it in a natural and genuine way. This can only happen once you go beyond the superficial elements and recognize the fundamentals in a given field.

4)      Maintain commitment to offering value – Offer value to others through the skills you cultivate and the knowledge you obtain. This directly relates to the element of fulfillment. Success is not an end product or a final accumulation. Measuring success in these terms leads to ongoing dissatisfaction, and you run the risk of losing all meaning in your efforts. Make a commitment to offering value through the skills you’ve cultivated. Those who offer value will not only feel fulfilled in the process, but will gain the favor of others who will directly or indirectly contribute to further success.

My Story:

Deciding I wanted to instruct successful fitness classes, I learned how to recognize a proven model. Since there are so many conflicting ideas and pseudo-scientific opinions floating around, it took a lot of investigation into different methods to distinguish fitness hype from successful programs.

Once I had cultivated discerning eye for quality fitness programs, I chose the top few I would use to model my own fitness program. I committed to learning their models of fitness programming. This took hours of observation. I examined the styles, attitudes, and programming of top instructors. I memorized their exercises, started using some of their language patterns, and took note of their distinct image.

My Story

After basing my program on other successful fitness instructors, I began to form my own variation of these perspectives. Adding my own style consisted of blending various forms of classes in order to form my unique class. I ran a bootcamp with steppers arranged in a circle. This allowed me to use the popular intensity of the bootcamp style, with the upbeat fun of the stepper, and to incorporate the sense of community gained in the circular formation in aqua-fit. Using the foundations I learned about good instructing, I applied my own meaning to the models. The meaning behind my program was to show others that intense workouts can also be fun workouts.

Through this meaning, I was able to maintain a commitment to offering value. My original goal of teaching fitness classes (perhaps for the sole purpose of money or status) soon changed. I made a commitment to enhance the lives of all those who I encountered in my classes. This enhancement was considered in the short term (while they were enjoying themselves doing the workout), and in the long term (achieving their fitness goals).The fulfillment gained from knowing I was offering value allowed me to feel completely confident in my instructing and won the favor of many attendees who requested my classes and recommended them to several others.

There is an absolutely amazing phenomena called fractionation which can make the above turn from an amazing dream into reality. The concept is actually quite simple and so is applying it practically. You’ve probably never heard of fractionation before in the context we will be discussing and if you have then I wouldn’t be surprised if you know a thing or two about hypnosis. Don’t worry if you don’t believe in hypnosis since that is only where I originally learned this amazing skill. You may have ever heard of something called kino escalation which actually implements the concept of fractionation and for that reason gets excellent results.

What is Fractionation?

Fractionation – The act of first associating or anchoring a response to a specific action followed by repetition spaced out over time causing a stronger and stronger reaction each time it is triggered.

Having mentioned anchoring we will also define what an anchor is and then do a fun little exercise to see fractionation in action.

Anchor - An anchor is an association of an action with a response. In other words it is a link which connects an action and a response. Just like a real anchor used to keep a ship from drifting away; an anchor trains your brain to respond in a certain way to a specific stimulus.

While fractionation may be a foreign concept to you, you can be certain you have experienced it throughout your life without even knowing. Anchors are a much simpler concept which you probably put to good use if you have ever used mnemonics. Mnemonics are techniques for helping you remember important information more easily with a much smaller amount of effort compared to repetition.

A Fun Fractionation Exercise

Before doing the action we first need to decide on an anchor to create. Remember to keep in mind that the stronger the response is at the time of the stimulus the stronger the association will be. On top of that fractionation is a strategy to increase the strength of an anchor.

Anchor – When touching your right ear think of the name Ditto Effect

Stimulus – Using your right hand you will touch your right ear.

Response – Remember the name Ditto Effect.

Now that we have defined our anchor take a moment and touch your right ear and while touching your right ear think to yourself “Ditto Effect” then stop touching your ear.

Doing this should create the anchor.

Fractionation from here is quite easy. Essentially you simply need to wait a short time then repeat the same process you used to create the anchor.

Try waiting 20 to 30 seconds and repeat the above and do this 3 to 5 times.

Hopefully now you should have in your head “Ditto Effect”. This should be associated with the action of touching your right ear.

Doing this is called fractionating a response. After completing this exercise try touching your right ear an hour later and notice if you find it easy to recall “Ditto Effect”.

Try it again tomorrow too! If you still find the association is strong tomorrow come back here and leave a comment to let us know it worked.

I first learned about this a few years ago and still remember the name of the hypnotist who taught me as if I could never break the strong association he helped show me how to create.

You might be wondering but how is this going to help me with dating?! Well now that we have gone through this exercise to get an intimate understanding of how it works; we can apply the same principles to building powerful attraction with that girl you really like.

How to Apply Fractionation

While there are some pretty complex ideas, techniques, and strategies which revolve around building attraction with fractionation at Ditto Effect we don’t really believe in tactics. We support self development, value, and being genuine. So hopefully by keeping the following pointers in mind you will be able to start creating more powerful connections with people while reducing the effort to do so.

1. Strong positive response: Keep in mind that you want to evoke a strong positive response during your interaction. You will be able to create this by providing high emotion value which is discussed in the post how to get her to text back.
2. The stimulus can be as simple as getting a text from you: Combining this with the Ditto Effect guide on how to text a girl you like can really get her addicted to you.
3. Less work with better results: Here is a perfect way you can avoid seeming needy or too available while simultaneously displaying high value. You can do this by having shorter interactions that leave a strong positive impression.

How to Be Mysterious

The Fundamentals:

1. Don’t seek approval – In any social situation, you should feel as if your presence offers value to the lives of all you encounter. You don’t need the approval of others, because you know your presence has value. If you feel the need to gain external validation, you are either undervaluing yourself, or you’re a parasite who finds pleasure in getting things rather than feeling the joy of offering value. Don’t try to impress people with your new James Bond moves… do it because you enjoy it. This is a fundamental frame you must internalize before moving on!
2. Operate with decisiveness – Indecisiveness instantly kills mystique.
3. Say less than you know – Remember the Wizard in the wizard of oz? He completely lost all his value once the certain was cast aside, only to reveal a small cowering man. If you have specialized knowledge, you can talk about it, but never assume the role of a teacher if the situation does not call for it. Think about a magician… a magician is only mysterious and alluring until he reveals his tricks.
4. Say more with less – “Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.” – Plato. Also remember that most of your communication is perceived through your non-verbal cues (body-language). This can be very important when learning how to text a girl you like. Use this to your advantage.
5. Don’t indulge in talking about yourself – Try this experiment: listen to people who are in casual conversation. Each person usually responds to the other with a fact about themselves… if you aware if this, you will be astounded how selfish most conversations actually are! Each person is merely waiting for the chance to talk about themselves. You can talk about yourself, but don’t indulge in this style of conversation.

Application:

1. Use the power of a ‘secret’ – When explaining something, you can interrupt yourself by saying “…but I really shouldn’t talk about it,” alter your voice tone to a quieter/ lower tone when revealing something, or when telling a story, build suspense by slowly revealing the details. Everyone wants to know a secret. (see Fundamentals #3).
2. Use ‘absurd answer’ humor – This is my personal favorite since I’m quite self-amused by it. An example of ‘absurd answer’ humor often requires purposely misinterpreting a question by stating an absurdly obvious answer. For example: Someone asks, “so what are you doing now?” (while catching up – in reference to school or work), I sometimes like to answer with what I’m literally doing at that exact moment, “…just sitting on a couch.” This only works if it amuses you. Also, this demonstrates a playful detachment from the usual rush to talk about yourself (see Fundamentals #5).
3. Learn the ‘take-away’ – This is an old-school tactic from the Mystery Method. It requires briefly taking your attention away from a girl who is interested in you, so that she works even harder to get your attention, therefore increasing attraction. This can be done by restricting your availability so you don’t come off as needy and validation-seeking (see Fundamentals #1). In practice, this may be as simple as talking to others for a bit (at a social gathering) or not responding so rapidly to text-messages.

Whether you’re playing with the ‘absurd answer,’ ‘creating a secret,’ or doing a ‘take-away,’ the take-home message is the same: Self-amusement, decisiveness, and detachment from needing validation will allow you to feel completely comfortable in your environment.

This comfort will amplify your allure and create a playful mystique. This playfulness is key: Like the video in fundamentals #2; at first he seems to be utterly serious, but as the scene progresses, we learn he is amusing himself by creating a random drink.

It is this vibe you need to internalize.

Back to Jim: he decided that making a friend would be easiest if hejoined a club, so he chose the chess club. He did pretty well there, as he wasan accomplished chess player. He easily connected with the guys in the club;they spoke about chess to no end! But when it came to inviting them to do stuffoutside of chess, they didn’t seem as interested. It didn’t make sense to him –if you get along in the club, why not just hang out outside of the club? WhatJim had inadvertently made was a group of activity partners.

Maybe you’re only looking to make an activity partner, that’s cool. ATennis buddy, perhaps? You got it! How about someone to talk about making newfriends with? You have that go-to buddy. Maybe you would prefer a friend foroverall activities, just like Jim was, to hang out with all the time – a broadfriendship, perhaps?

Often, people will tell you to take an interest in the would-be friend, keep asking questions and be non-judgmental of anything they say. Most of that is good, but it’s definitely not enough. P: Hey, how are you?

Them: Good, you?

P: Great! What’re you up to?

You get the idea, and I’m sure you’ve been there before. It’s boring, It’s flat, and worst of all it’s setting up the relationship to be boring. You’re like a bad newspaper reporter asking personal questions. Let’s flip this around: Have you ever had an interaction like this? You feel almost as if the person is desperate to be friends with you. Some might say it’d be nice for someone to be desperate to befriend them, but that’s not a friend you’d be gaining, it’s a worshiper. Trust me, that gets out of hand much too quickly.

SMS Definition

SMS, which stands for Short Messaging Service, is a service which allows sending and receiving short text messages between devices such as a fixed line or mobile phones.

An SMS often refers to a text and vice versa.

You may say “I will send you an SMS” instead of saying “I will send you a text”.

If someone says “I will SMS you” that is the same as them saying “I will text you”.

How Do We Define Text Messaging?

Text messaging, or texting, is a form of communication between devices such as a cell phone, black berry, PDA, ect. Text is written on one device to be sent through the mobile network to arrive hastily at the recipients mobile device.

The term text messaging may also be referred to as sending an SMS. SMS stands for Short Message Service (SMS) and often represents an easy short form which means text messaging.

If you text a friend you may say you are text messaging a friend.You may say you are sending an SMS to a friend. You May say you are texting a friend or even texting with a friend.
